background: carotid ultrasound appears to be useful in the assessment of cardiovascular risk. in this study, we have assessed the carotid intima-media thickness (cimt) in a group of individuals without a history of cardiovascular events. methods: a sample of 431subjects (189 [43.9%] males and 242 [56.1%] females) was obtained from an urban population using a stratifi ed-cluster method in mashhad stroke and heart atherosclerosis disorder study. none of the subjects had a history of the cardiovascular event. carotid artery duplex ultrasound was used to determine the cimt in all subjects, and to identify those with an abnormal value (cimt [+]; i.e., cimt ≥ 0.8 mm). dietary intake of participants was assessed using a questionnaire for 24-h dietary recall. the relationship between anthropometric, biochemical and dietary data and cimt were assessed. results: the mean age of subjects was 48.7 ± 8.0 years. of the 431 patients, 118 (27.4%) were found to be cimt (+). of the cardiovascular parameters assessed, only age (odds ratio [or] [95% confi dence interval (ci)], 1.11 [0.56-4.34]; p < 0.01) and male gender (or [95% ci], 1.14 [0.63-2.23]; p < 0.05) were signifi cant independent predictors of ultrasound defi ned cimt. crude and total energy adjusted intake were not associated with the presence of cimt (+). conclusions: it appears that within a relatively young iranian population of individuals without a history of cardiovascular event, the presence of cimt (+) defined by duplex ultrasound cut-off value of ≥0.8 mm, did not associate with several modifiable cardiovascular risk factors or measures of dietary intake.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Nutritional Intake are not Associated with Ultrasound-defined Increased Carotid Intima Media Thickness in Individuals Without a History of Cardiovascular Events

BACKGROUND Carotid ultrasound appears to be useful in the assessment of cardiovascular risk. In this study, we have assessed the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in a group of individuals without a history of cardiovascular events. METHODS A sample of 431subjects (189 [43.9%] males and 242 [56.1%] females) was obtained from an urban population using a stratified-cluster method in Mashhad...

Carotid artery Intima-Media thickness and cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients

Introduction: Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) correlates with cardiovascular mortality in patients under hemodialysis. In this investigation, we evaluated relationship between CCA-IMT with dependent and independent cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 51 chronic hemodialysis patients, (31 males and 20 fema...

Percentiles of carotid intima-media thickness in a Spanish population with and without cardiovascular risk factors.

, n : the well-known fact that adequate control of cardiovascular risk factors in secondary prevention reduces the rates of morbidity and mortality. An important aspect of CODIMET is its contribution of data on a large population selected on the basis of high cardiovascular risk, consisting of patients with coronary heart disease or type 2 diabetes, considered to be the equivalent to cardiovasc...

Carotid intima-media thickness and plaque in cardiovascular risk assessment.

Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been shown to predict cardiovascular (CV) risk in multiple large studies. Careful evaluation of CIMT studies reveals discrepancies in the comprehensiveness with which CIMT is assessed-the number of carotid segments evaluated (common carotid artery [CCA], internal carotid artery [ICA], or the carotid bulb), the type of measurements made (mean or maximum ...

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in a Colombian Population With Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Psoriasis is now known to have a clear association with metabolic syndrome and its components. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and increased carotid intima-media thickness in psoriasis patients seen in the dermatology department of a quaternary hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a descriptive cross-sect...

Associations of Cardiovascular Risk Factors with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Middle-Age Adults and Elders

AIMS Elevated carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a preclinical phenotype of atherosclerotic diseases. There are significant sex differences in the morbidities of cardiovascular diseases and their major determinants, and we explored the sex-specific effects of cardiovascular factors on cIMT by a community-based study. METHODS We measured the cIMT and cardiovascular profiles of 1579 resid...
